Induction 2011-2012

All new members need to be inducted before being able to attend the regular trips. The induction will cover an essential safety briefing and your first flights. After your induction you're free to attend any of the weekly trips.

Induction days

Inductions are currently combined with our regular trips. If you haven't been inducted yet, just sign up to a regular trip, then email the committee to let us know you need an induction.

What to expect

We'll leave from the UWE bus stops at around 08:00, aiming to be at the Cotswold Gliding Club for 09:00.

If you are able to drive to the club and give lifts to other members, please read the guidance for drivers. You'll need to register as a driver with the Students' Union, please click here for details.

Once we're at the club, you will be given a safety briefing - then we'll get the gliders and do some flying!

When on the ground, you'll be learning how to handle gliders, how the winch works, and how to run the launchpoint. When you're in the air, you can have as much or as little control as you want, just chat to your instructor about what you want from your first flight.

Kit list

What to bring on your induction trip:

  • £5 for transport
  • £20-ish for flights (each launch is £6.50, but you could get several flights)
  • Packed lunch and snacks - or £5 to spend in the club house
  • Thermos
  • Warm clothes - it can get cold and windy (check the weather forecast)
  • Sunglasses
  • Camera
  • Pen and paper
  • £3.50 for a gliding logbook and training card

Please bring some small change (i.e. pound coins and £5 notes - not just £20 notes), as there is very little change available at the club.
